Can you prevent a concussion?

Can you prevent a concussion?

This is a question that comes up often and the simple answer is yes, but in reality no.

If you never suffer an accident (car accident, trip or fall) and don’t play a sport where you could have a collision (which doesn’t have to be to the head), then you will never have a concussion.

Unfortunately, accidents happen and being active is essential to the health of our bodies, so concussion will always happen.

People try and take precautions – helmets, mouth guards etc. – while these are important pieces of safety equipment, they do not lessen concussions (they can help prevent other serious injury, so do wear them if needed!)

In fact, at certain times the use of scrum caps in rugby or helmets in other sports can lead to the player feeling more protected, taking more risks and forgoing the correct techniques which can then INCREASE the chance of concussion!

Research and development for equipment is happening all the time to help limit concussions – but there has been nothing developed to stop concussions yet.

Using correct techniques, mitigating risk among other approaches can lessen the chances of concussions occurring and thankfully on current evidence, if managed correctly, a concussion should not pose any significant long term risk.

If you would like more details regarding concussion – management, treatment or otherwise - just get in touch.
